The main academic programme of Govt. Banikanta College of Teacher Education is Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) is a Two year certificate course under Gauhati University from the session 2015-2016. Intake capacity is 50 session 2020. This college is conducting two years D.El.Ed. course for the in service teachers of lower primary and upper primary classes in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.under NIOS. The intake of D.El.Ed is 200 and the trainees are deputed by SCERT Assam. Besides these, the college also conducts different short term training programme for In-service Teachers of Secondary Schools  from time to time for their better performance in the teaching-learning situation.


The college also accommodates a Study Center for B.Ed. under IGNOU, which was started in January, 2000 for the graduate in-service teachers of North East India besides the regular B.Ed. course under University. The minimum duration of B.Ed. programme is two years while the maximum period allowed for completion of the programme is four years. Besides these, the MA. in education and M.Ed. programmes are also started from the year 2008 and 2009 respectively sponsored by the IGNOU. The center provides counseling sessions and contact programmes like workshop, audio-video programmes etc. and also conduct the written examinations under IGNOU.


Total number of seats as limited by the NCTE and Gauhati University is 50 all of which may be filled up by the secondary school teachers deputed by the Government of Assam. After the  completion of admission of in-service teachers deputed by the government, the remaining seats will be filled up by the fresh candidates on merit basis through the Entrance Test conducted by Gauhati University .

A)  Admission forms for admission in the college with prospectus can be obtained from the Office of Banikanta College of Teacher Education (IASE), Guwahati -7, after the declaration of Entrance Examination result by the Gauhati University.

(B) The admission form must be duly filled up by the candidate supported with required attested copies of testimonials from HSLC onwards and submitted to the college office as per date mentioned in the college notice board during office hours.

(C) Fresh Candidates will be selected for admission into the college on merit basis by Gauhati University through the Entrance Test only if seats are available after giving admission to the Deputed teachers.

(D) The selected candidates are required to produce all the original documents i.e. Mark sheets, certificates of the qualifying examinations, age certificate, cast certificate and PRC wherever necessary at the time of admission.

(E)      The candidates selected for admission must take admission within the notified date with necessary payments failing, which the admission stands cancelled.  


The college starts at 9-45 AM with a prayer session, class stats from 10 AM and continues up to 4.30 PM from Monday to Saturday.


Various co-curricular activities such as games and sports, music, literary and cultural activities like wall magazine, debate, extempore, academic visits, National Science Day, world environment. Day, Banikanta Divas, National Educational Day etc. are celebrated throughout the year. A yoga workshop in conducted for the Teacher-Trainee every year. The Trainees are encouraged to take active part in all types of programmes for being successful and effective teachers.
